About Us

The Tennessee Language Center is an agency of the Institute for Public Service of the University of Tennessee focused on language learning, teaching, and services for the public sector, the business community, and private citizens with a mission of facilitating the intercultural communication goals of Tennesseans and others around the globe.

The Tennessee Language Center was created as an agency of the State of Tennessee in 1986 under the name Tennessee Foreign Language Institute (TFLI). A one of its kind in state government throughout the U.S., TFLI was a “center of excellence” preparing Tennessee for globalization. The Tennessee Language Center became part of the Institute for Public Service of the University of Tennessee in 2018.
