IN A DIFFERENT KEY is the film Caren Zucker and John Donvan were determined to make—the culmination of their 25-year partnership bringing forth stories of people on the spectrum with honesty and compassion, which began when Caren’s son Mickey was diagnosed in 1996. Inspired by their Pulitzer-nominated history of autism, IN A DIFFERENT KEY follows Caren’s journey into autism’s past and present as a journalist shedding light on the needs, the gifts and the dreams of the more than 3 million Americans living lives on the spectrum today; and as a mother supporting the now-adult Mickey’s own journey to find his place in the world.
